Description

Manali to Leh Cycling is once in a lifetime event that every cyclist around the world dream of. The trip starts at Manali: which is called the door to the heaven of the Himalayas, which has unluckily become honeymoon spot! The trip makes you cross 5 passes with a maximum altitude of Khardung La (5359 mts). Each one of these passes is exceptional in their own stature: Bara Lachha La is one of the most loopiest passes, like Twin brothers Naki La & Lachu lung La are standing just next to each other, Rohtang Pass is the most erratic and moody of them all, and last but not the least & the toughest to cross – Tanglang La (5360 mts). Awesome. Right? Well there is much more. With 21 curves Gata loops will also amaze you when you see it from the top, Moray plains is one of the highest & coldest deserts in the world, snow laden peaks, rivers like Chandra-Bhaga & Indus, and more. The city of Leh needs no introduction which ends your expedition in a perfect way. Well, it’s not possible to describe the beauty of the expedition in words! One has to do it to feel it.

Itinerary

Itinerary

After reaching Manali, check-in to the booked hotel or orientation camp set up by Challengers Hub. Minutes will start after lunch with a round of introductions for the participants and organizers. The expedition leader will brief about the expedition and after that you are free to explore Manali. Overnight at the hotel/ camp.
The first ascent of the journey prepares up for the tough ride ahead and takes you through the amazing view of pine and deodar trees. To beat the traffic rush, we will take an early start destined for Rohtang Pass. To reach Marhi, one has to negotiate many hairpin bends. Marhi offers attractive camping sites and get ready for the muddy ascent of Rohtang Pass. Overnight in camps.
Our next stop is Sissu via Rohtang pass from Marhi. We begin our day by having our breakfast and then finishing 18km ascent to Rohtang pass. You will come across some remarkable views of snow-covered mountain peaks of Spiti Valley. For some refreshment we will take a halt at Rohtang pass after which we'll have to take a steady descent to Gramphu. Khagling is another name of Sissu which is a small town in Lahaul valley on the banks of the river Chandra. At Sissu, here we will be camping for the night. Relax after an exhausting day because you'll be up fresh the next day for new adventures.
The day begins with a steady climb up to Gondla, 244m above Sissu. There’s a fast descent to Tandi from Gondla which is located at the convergence of the Chandra River and Bhaga River, which combine to form the Chandra- Bhaga River that later becomes known as Chenab downstream in Jammu and Kashmir . We will cross the towns of Tandi and Keylong and ride on a low gradient all the way up till Jispa, where the river opens out into a wide valley. We camp on the banks of the Bhaga River.
The road climbs gradually to Darcha some 10km from Jispa and then the climb to Patseo starts. The land is much drier and the road is dusty and rocky. We can now sense the isolation of the area, with a few sheep scattered around and start to enter the territory of the Lamas. You can also see the bleak and overwhelming spectacle of the higher Himalayan ranges. At Zing Zing bar the steep ascent to Baralacha-La starts
The day begins early and the cyclist ascend the mountains up to the Baralacha La at 5030m. We cross Deepak Tal located at 14,000 ft with the snow-capped Mulkila peaks forming a picturesque backdrop. The pass is dry with no vegetation, the sides of the mountains looking more like a quarry covered with loose rocks and scree. The route descends steadily to the wide Sarchu Plains.
The day starts with some fairly relaxed cycling but quickly we are negotiating ‘21 loops of Gata’ that crisscross all the way to the summit of Nakila at 5050m. A small downhill section and you will reach to Whisky Nala. Overnight stay here at camp
With a 7km ascent to Taglang La at 5150 we begin our day followed by an extended descent along a steep gorge to reach Pang. An 8 km switchback climb from Pang, leads us to the flat top of the Moray Plains at 4700m. This area which is barren is known for its fast winds and sandstorms and extreme temperatures in the morning and evening. The only mark of life is the hardy Nomadic Changpas who can be seen nurture their yaks in this most desolate place. For camping, our first choice will be Tso kar lake which a short detour from the main highway. In case, due to some reason this route is closed, we will camp at Debring which is just before the ascent to world's second-highest motorable pass at Tanglang La, 5,360m
Tanglang- La at 5360m is the World’s second highest motorable pass in the world which is exciting and challenging too. More huge openness and isolation from the rest of the world. Indeed, this is a challenge, but really satisfying when you reach the top, before we set off down the terrifying descent to the village of Lato. The first sight of Lato will mesmerize you as you will watch the lovely green patches of small Ladakhi farms, the Gompas, and barren mountains in the backdrop
The scenery changes dramatically as we continue our journey, we arrive in a fertile valley that is spotted with stupas and pretty villages. The overwhelming red and green coloured mountains that stretch for miles add to the attractiveness of the remarkable scenery. You can really see the tectonic forces at work. As we follow the road towards Leh, crossing the Indus River the road recuperates dramatically This is a relaxed ride as we pass the Thiksey Monastery and the Chortens Garden entering Leh itself. Back to civilization and all its home comforts. Cheers! you have just crossed the four major mountain passes and ridden over 480 kms.
Early morning just we will set off for Khardung La as the sun comes up. Cycling 45km and gaining 2000m, this is the final challenge of the trip. In the world, it is the highest motorable road takes you to a dizzy 5359 m! the view from the top is remarkable, stretching from the Indus valley in the South over the endless peaks and ridges of the Zanskar range to the giants of the Saser Massif in the North. You can feel honored for the true achievement as you finish the trip with your final satisfying descent. After a small party, the trip will end in the evening. Hotel stay on this day is included in the fee. As per your convenience, you can return from Leh. Kindly book your return flight accordingly.
Check-Out from the hotel/Guesthouse.
